NEW PERSONAL BLEND!!

My personal tea blend, Good Omens - Crowley, is available for purchase. If you're new to Adagio (great tea store!), save $5 with GC # 1096976495.

Created while I listened to Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch on BBC Radio 4. I wanted to make a flavor for Crowley and Aziraphale, so this blend is for the demonic member of the duo.

Lapsang souchong, pu erh dante, and Ceylon Oriental Spice all mixed together in a good early mix with some spicey tones. Top that all off I added cardamom for Crowley s like to add spice to the world.

Sleepy Saturday

Today was a lazy day.  Probably good because our heater decided to stop working properly sometime last night.  We only realized it today when it was so bloody cold in the house.  I had planned on sleeping in today but since the meds and possibly the fibro itself causes an issue with my ability to regulate my body temperature, David told me I had to stay in the room with a heater on.  So, I stayed in bed with a room heater on and my hot-pad turned up.  David was working down in the kitchen making meat sauce and tortellini for a LARP party he is attending tonight, with the oven on for added heat.  So I slept a lot of the day away and then made myself a pot of the Elsa tea blend.  The Elsa blend was tasty, the scent of the blend is a bit overpowering but the blend mellowed out in the boiling water.  I'm not sure I'd be up for buying this blend again though.  Not any fault of Adagio or even the nice girl who created the blend.  All of the fandom blends from this Adagio blend creator, specifically the Disney Princess blends, seem to be very heavy on aroma in the tin and there is something about overly intense aromas that actually keeps me from enjoying some things.  That aside, I hate wasting anything and since it didn't make me ill, I drank the whole pot while watching some TV shows.  After about 2pm, Rich got the heater working, thanks to a LARP friend of ours, Dan.

After the heater got fixed, I took a shower and ran downstairs to say "I love you" to my husband when he needed to head out to his party.  I made another pot of tea, the Spiced Apple Chai this time.  I ran back upstairs and turned on Hulu, I wanted to get caught up on Constantine.  I absolutely love this show and since I love the Hellblazer comics, it's wonderful.  I got to the end of the most recent show and now I need a new pot of tea.  Apparently this is a day full of tea drinking - YAY!!!

Funny, I posted on FB almost in jest that I wanted to have a tea party as one of my big NPC's from the Alliance LARP Gettysburg chapter and everyone seemed very jazzed by that idea.  Maybe this is actually something I should do.  I wonder if I should create some teas inspired by our game and then bring them along.  LOL, that would be a hoot.  Might need to start working on creating and testing those blends...look out world...not only is Emily into plot writing she's now into tea blend creating. Tremble, it's ok, I would too.

Thank Goodness It's Friday!

As this week seems to be absolutely horrible for my fibro flare-ups, I am thankful for the distraction or at least the momentary respite I get from picking, preparing, and drinking my tea.  It is also adding a nice standard of action for me in the mornings at work, one which I am enjoying for the pause or calm I get while my tea steeps.

So, here we get to the Therapy part of my daily blogging and more specifically the daily tea drinking.  I am very blessed to only have two major medical issues, as several of my dear friends have more issues or more severe issues that I know I would be challenged to deal with properly.  My chronic issues, both of which hit sporadically though with increasing coordination of late, make it so something as simple as sitting down to talk about tea or better make a fresh cup is a vacation.  Sadly the fibro makes it so some small tasks like scooping my loose leaf into the infuser is difficult or actually holding my tea cup.  I've learned that there are days when I will drop my teacup or spill hot tea on myself, but there are more often than those days ones where I can feel a sense of serenity or happiness from the simple act of pouring flavored hot liquid into a stylish but simple cup and sipping carefully.  There are days where I cannot move well without hurting, but on those days I shop online for new tea blends, tea sets, funny tea infusers, and even various honeys.  I might even be a bit of a fanatic about honeys as much as teas at this point.  On those days I might ask for help to make a pot of tea with the bagged tea since it will be less mess and easier for someone to assist or even make for me.

David is patient and only reminds me every other day (I'm kidding, he only has joked about it) that I might need to learn how to manage my tea and honey purchases as I am running out of places to immediately house things.  We have a full house of people and space is at a premium, so I can't just decide to annex a whole part of the pantry, though I have been tempted *chuckle*.  I'm thinking this is the perfect excuse to look more seriously for a hutch or drysink that has the necessary drawers and compartments to house all of the fun drink containers and tea blends.  I also want to find better containers for the teas, be they tins or a small apothecary chest or any of those types of accessories to store and display everything.

So, now that I have done the therapy part, let's get to the tea review.  Today's tea is Pomegranate Green.  Described as a China Green Tea and sweet-tart pomegranate.  It is a fruity tart tea that I am enjoying for a pleasant distraction to my day.  I have some Bee Folks Goldenrod Honey and added a bit, just a bit to compliment the fruit.  The fruit is pomegranate and a hint of raspberry, definitely fitting the sweet-tart in the description, thankfully also two of my favorite fruits, and that is the taste that lingers after a sip.  The green tea has a light and almost delicate delivery and I find this refreshing as I snack on a banana and some blueberries.  Definitely would have to be in the mood for a fruity blend, and thankfully I was this morning.  This was just the right way to sit and sip today.  I'm also starting to think that I need to sort my teas by the emotion or situation they compliment or can fix.  Having a stressful day that is ending a fairly painful week, try a soft green tea with some punchy fruit flavor, so categories "Stress" and "Pain".  I might need to geek out and build a matrix for this, to match the perfect emotion and issue with the right tea.  OMG!  I have to go do this now.  That is probably how I am going to drive the guys nuts tonight is figuring out the algorithm for tea to non-logical emotional state.  *chuckles*  I'll get back to you on my findings and if I come up with any suitable initial matrix or matrices.

Below is a picture of the blend and the color, very soft and pleasant.

Bunch More Samples - I Might Have A Problem

  • earl grey moonlight sample
  • terra sampler (pu erh teas)
  • chocolate sample
  • ginger sample
  • valentines sample
  • hibiscus sample
  • chocolate chai sample
  • spiced apple chai sample
  • matcha sample
  • blood orange sample
  • mango melange sample
  • wild strawberry sample
  • rooibos peach sample
  • Lucy Fur (my personal tea blend)

So I put in another order tonight, I just wanted a ton of samples to try out different flavors.  I had a bit of a fibro flare-up at 7pm, so David walked me upstairs to lay down.  While I was laying down I felt like I wanted to do something fun, and since moving is a bit out of the question for now, I went on Adagio Teas' website and added a bunch of different samples to my shopping cart.  Even better was the fact that my friend Kate sent me a gift (she loves tea too) of the spiced apple chai sample!  That was so sweet of her.
After this order, I sent her a gift from her favorites list.  Because friends have fun sending each other gifts *chuckles*.

Anyway, so my evening is really relaxed at this point, since I can't really move much or do anything active.  I am filling my time with skimming through Etsy stores and typing away in this blog while watching Twin Peaks.

Fun future plans and interesting insights.  I am wicked excited about the idea of having apothecary cabinets and cases that look like they are from pre-1900.  Maybe even considering getting a kit together to use for Dystopia Rising to play with my friends.  I'm an unabashed nerd and I am always trying to come up with something cool to do and use for Alliance LARP and now DR.  I think I'm in this weird pseudo-nesting thing since I just want to decorate rooms or buy these weird esoteric things that fit with ideas I think are nifty or just have never seen done before and fit with David's and my personalities.  You might be wondering what this has to do with tea...well it sorta has to do with my plans for wicked cool focal pieces and storage.  So I'm thinking of finding a card catalog cabinet to repurpose for a spice or tea cabinet.  I am sure this will take a while to find and then complete, but very worth the effort.  I'll keep you appraised of the search...hoping for something that doesn't cost a whole ton, which might make this search take significantly longer.

After all of this, I guess I am also letting you know that I have not had any tea tonight, but I did order some!  I'll make up for it tomorrow.

Do The 'Casablanca Twist'

I could barely open my eyes today...so I stumbled into work looking quite a mess. Thank goodness we aren't generally seen by the public, or they might be concerned that the Zombiepocalypse started already. Since this is not an episode of "The Walking Dead" or even a graphic print...I'll get back to my morning.

I brought two blends with me to work. One of the two Adagio Teas subscription blends and a Gevalia blend. Since I needed a major wake-up, I selected the Casablanca Twist from Adagio Teas. This tea is described as "a bright muscatel spring Darjeeling with fresh cool mint". The description does not lie,  the bold mint is wonderful and the relaxing flavor of the green tea Darjeeling is a great compliment. There is the usual tannic astringent characteristic and some notes of the musky or muscatel spiciness. It's not too intense and the mint is a nice flavor and seems to take the front seat on the palate.

I'm a bit more awake now, definitely thanks to the tea and the effervescent mintiness. I'll probably have a cup or two more this morning.

My vote on this tea, very tasty and well done. If you're looking for a lighter tea than the usual Darjeeling black and intense enlivening aroma of mint, this tea is a good option!

I HAD TO SHARE! I Made My First Personal Tea Blend!!

My personal tea blend, Lucy Fur, is available for purchase. If you're new to Adagio (great tea store!), save $5 with GC # 5761056061.
I thought these would be bold, lively, and different flavors together. Assam, mint, ginger, and the tang of orange - it just embodies my cat Lucy Fur.

  • I would like to explain that Lucy's name is just Lucy but she sometimes gets the funny surname of Fur (say it all together lol) because she is evil and will try to "assassinate" you any chance she gets.

First Adagio Order Received!!

I was like a kid at Christmas when we saw the package on the doorstep!!  I knew the package had been delivered because Adagio Teas is amazing and sent me updates through Twitter, telling me the shipping progress of my order.

So, I dropped everything, my purse and coat and my yoga mat and ran to the kitchen counter to open the package.  I am sure my husband, David, and best friend, Rich, were amused.  But I did not pay attention, I just wanted to open the box and try out each of the teas.  So I cut open the box and dug out the two larger packaged loose leaf teas from my monthly subscription and then the small tins of Disney Princess themed teas and a somewhat medium package of the free sample for the Spiced Apple Chai.  I had a crap day at work and felt horrible all day, I even had to skip my Pilates class, so I wanted to start with a good brew.

I chose the Spiced Apple Chai first, I wasn't feeling minty or Darjeeling, so I immediately pulled out my tea pot and set the electric kettle to boil (yes, I use an electric kettle and not a stove kettle - I'm impatient haha).  I read the measurement instructions for the tea and put the correct amount into my mesh tea ball.  The kettle clicked off and was ready to go, so I put the mesh tea ball full of delicious smelling Spiced Apple Chai into the pot and poured in a 3/4 full pot.  After 5 minutes of pacing the tea had steeped and I barely even waited for my cup to cool before I took a sip. DIVINE!

I immediately sat down and watched Scotty play Shadow of Mordor and sipped my Chai.  I couldn't stop raving, so I wrote a review, I posted to FB and Twitter and talked the boys' ears off about the taste.  I finished my cup quickly, but not without full enjoyment, and then poured another cup.  This time I added a little bit of Wildflower Honey from the Bee Folks.  EVEN BETTER!  The Honey is light so it doesn't ruin the taste of the Chai.

Needless to say, I finished the whole pot of Chai by the end of dinner and decided to make a small cup of the Disney Princess tea, so I chose Jasmine since it was spiced and thus close enough to the Chai I had just enjoyed.  But that review my dears is for another day!  Stay tuned for more reviews and more blog posts in the coming days.  Will Emily enjoy another cup of tea tomorrow or will she actually find a tea she doesn't like?  Find out tomorrow!  Same Tea Blog!  Same Tea Channel!

Good Morning Wednesday

So, I made it into work today. Still in pain but feeling like I should make a valiant attempt at being a productive member of society. I don't feel overly well and I want a black tea but nothing to harsh.  I have a nice mix that always tastes great from my local tea shop in Lemoyne, Kauffman's Coffee Tea & Spice Shop.

The mix is fruit and spice black tea. It brews dark in no time but letting it steep for 3 minutes is recommended. I almost always sweeten this one with some honey as I think it makes the fruit just a bit more pronounced. Light honeys are a bit too delicate for this so I am having a little bit of buckwheat honey added. Not too much, I don't want a sickeningly sweet taste.

It is nice to sit at my desk for a few moments with my Tea For One set and just take a deep breath to enjoy my cup of tea and take a moment to center my mind and get ready for the rest of my work day. The day/morning started out a little bit rushed already so being able to sit down and just sip and read the emails I missed from yesterday's sick day helps me ground myself for catch-up today.

Bad Symptom Day - Called In Sick

So I woke up several times in the night due to pain and had to get out some of my heavier medicine and a hot pad.  So when it came time to go to work today, I could barely move.  The pain was a bit blinding and made me very sick, so I made myself some tea.

I will admit that I did take my morning dose of medicine with a bit of tea, so not all of the soothing or lessened pain came from the tea, but it did help lift my emotional spirits and I was able to enjoy a nice cuppa.

The tea is Blend 1776 from The Whistling Kettle.

Blend 1776 is a nice smooth black tea with a sweet flavor of strawberry and some maple notes.  It's rather like a standard black tea, good with honey or without.  It has all of the body, briskness, malty flavor, and strong, bright color of an Assam and the citrus notes of the Ceylon blends.  The added maple and strawberry only make this taste better maybe even make the "roasted" flavor of the Assam.  Blend 1776 would be a good morning or breakfast tea, but honestly I will drink it no matter the time of day.

I had a cup without honey, it was pleasant tasting and helped me to relax a little.  I had a second cup and this time added a little clover honey.  Just a nice black tea with a little bit of a twist to make it a blend all its own.

I would recommend this for anyone that likes English black tea and wants a bit of kick from the Colonies.  (yes, I said it *chuckles*)

Orders and Monthly Subscription

So below is the order I made with Adagio Teas.  I got the spiced apple chai sample when I shared the order on Facebook and Twitter.  I ordered a 6 month subscription for green and oolong tea delivery.  I'm very excited about the selection and I love green tea.

In addition I picked up some delightful "fandom" based teas, deciding to be cute and go with Disney for my first go.

Why Blog About Tea? Why Tea? How Is Tea Therapy?

Okay, let us start with the first question "why blog about tea?",  Well that is actually fairly simple.  I'm a forty hour workweek woman living with a chronic illness.  My chronic illness is fueled or made worse by stress, and working in "corporate America" I need to be able to live with the day-to-day stress of work while de-stressing enough that my condition is not worsened.  One of the best ways I've found to do this is to sit down with a good cup of tea. And then I thought..."why not figure a way to enjoy tea, share my ideas, and maybe drink some different teas..." also I have some awesome friends that suggested blogging.

So that leads to the next question, "why tea?".  This goes back to my undergrad years at Mount Holyoke College, where I was privileged enough to be able to study Zen and Japanese culture with Tadanori Yamashita and his wife, Nobue Socho Yamashita.  In this period, I was able to participate in Japanese tea ceremony.  It was during this time that I learned my deep appreciation for the Zen of tea. I studied and practiced meditation and ceremony that helped me realize a way to calm my mind and reestablish a balance in my body.  Since that time, I have found that when I really need to center myself or when I really need to have a moment of no-thought, tea is still that way to find peace, or even just a moment of relaxation.

So now, when I find myself caught up in the day-to-day stresses of the working world or the day-to-day stresses of adulthood, money, house, relationship, family, friends; I know that I can sit down with a good cup of tea to relax.  Having fairly difficult to treat or even completely understand chronic illness makes me look to ways that I can regulate my own body so that I'm not relying on medications only, and I am making sure in some way that I'm not making my symptoms worse

The beauty of tea is that dependent on my mood, the situation, and even a passing thought, there is an available flavor that I can find to help me recenter.

The above at least gives you a glimpse or a brief explanation of how I perceive tea to be a therapy.  Obviously this is in no way stating that you should substitute medicines necessary to treat illness with tea, but if you're looking for ways to find a way to facilitate inner peace, or just a period of no-thought, then tea might be an answer for you.

With this blog I plan on reviewing various teas, different brands, loose leaf versus bag, and a lot of other ways to enjoy a good cuppa.  I hope you'll join me and enjoy this journey, maybe contribute or even comment with feedback.

Many Blessings and "May the Tea Be with You" :)
